About
We are making strides with preventative cancer, and detection in early stages as opposed to receiving a Stage 4 Cancer Diagnosis. It is now possible to detect a Cancer Gene within the human body before it ever developes into a cancer. This is all thanks to a 10 year project called the “Geno Project’. The Geno Project traced every cell in the human body. We can now pin point specific areas in the body where a cancer cell may be. Therefore, Medical Insurance companies are beginning to recognize and pay attention to Genetic Cancer Screening as a Preventative Care effort.
AFFA is an organization of Advocates who are dedicated to helping Americans qualify and receive Genetic Cancer Screening Tests. The test is designed to determine your risk of developing up to 8 cancer types and is usually recommended when certain types of cancer run in a family and a gene mutation is suspected. Whether inherited or not, cancer is a genetic disease and decoding its DNA can help better diagnose, treat and manage the disease. The Genetic Testing for cancer risk is called Predictive Testing. It is a simple “mouth swab” test that can help Scientists predict the likelihood that a person will develop cancer in his or her lifetime. Scientists can use the information received from these tests to help them learn how to STOP the cancer gene from mutating.
If an interested party qualifies for a Genetic Cancer Screening many Medicare plans (in all US states) will cover a Genetic Screening Test at no cost to the recipient. Our role is to “Pre-Qualify” the patron. As Advocates we provide a Scope of Appointment, assist with filling out a Family Health Questioaire, Check the Medicare Coverage to see if their Insurance plan will cover the screening, and place a phone call with a Clinical Administrator. The Clinical Administrator will determine if the testing should be done based on family history. The AFFA Advocate will then take a “cheek swab”. Your DNA sample will go to our lab for analysis. Once screened the client will be followed up by a telephone call from a Telemedicine Doctor who provides a diagnosis of their results.
The bottom line is this: even if a person has a cancer gene, it does not mean that he/she has cancer. What it does mean is that his/her medical information can be shared with their personal doctors who may chose diet, life style changes, specific medications and/or other treatments that may prevent the gene from mutating into a cancer. The information may also be passed down to family members for the benefit of their heirs.
