Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Snoring are affecting Americans in epidemic proportions. While many snorers are motivated to seek treatment for social reasons, like getting off the couch and back into the bedroom, most people who snore are unaware of the not –so-silent killer: sleep apnea. Frequent loud snoring and choking or gasping for breath while asleep are two telltale signs that the snoring may be masking the underlying condition of obstructive sleep apnea.

While there are a number of treatments available for snoring and sleep apnea including continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) and surgeries like the pillar procedure and Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (more commonly known as UPPP or UP3), these options have significant drawbacks. In the case of CPAP, while it is extremely effective, many patients cannot tolerate the air pressure, find the mask uncomfortable or feel claustrophobic when attempting this treatment for sleep apnea. Generally CPAP is not used as a solution for snoring. Snoring surgeries on the other hand are painful, have mediocre results and are recommended only for those who snore. The pillar procedure and UPPP are not recognized by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as first line therapies for obstructive sleep apnea.
