Nutrition and Weight Management by Curves

Tuesday, January 5th, 2021

Over the past 30 years, there has been a lot of conflicting information about what we should and shouldn’t be eating for weight loss and optimum health. In that same time frame, obesity rates have skyrocketed. Most fad diets have focused on restricting or eliminating certain food groups such as fats or carbohydrates.

With most weight loss plans, a majority of the weight loss is in the form of water weight and muscle mass. Muscle is the most metabolically active tissue in the body, meaning the more muscle you have the more calories you are burning. Losing muscle means you are burning fewer calories and slowing your metabolism down. A slower metabolism will make losing weight difficult and sustaining weight loss nearly impossible.

For the past 20 years, Dr. Kreider at Texas A&M University has been studying the Curves Nutrition Program. His research found that healthy eating, the right combination of protein, carbohydrates and fats, combined with a complete exercise program such as Curves, protects muscle mass and ensures that up to 95% of the weight loss is in the form of fat.

The Curves Nutrition Program is a three phase approach to weight loss that will help build healthy eating and exercise habits for life. Throughout this, you will also learn about the importance each macronutrient plays on your health, the importance of vitamins and minerals as well as reading food labels.

This program is self-paced and can be done from the comfort of your own home. Then, once a week you will meet with your Curves Coach at your local club to review what you have learned and help answer any questions you have. Your coach will become a trusted, valuable partner in helping you develop healthy habits.

Stretching and Stress by Curves

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2020

Stretching is the 3rd component to a complete workout along with strength training and cardio. It’s also often the most skipped portion because many do not understand its true benefits. Stretching after a workout helps your body cool down. By focusing on each stretch, your heart rate and breathing can safely return to normal. Stretching also prolongs the fat burning that occurs throughout your workout.

Recent studies have shown that in the past 10 years people have become more inactive than ever. We are spending an average of 10 hours a day sitting leading to poor posture and tight muscles. Regular stretching helps keeps muscles long, lean, healthy and flexible and may also help reduce pain. Without stretching, muscles become shorten and tight. This leads to a shortened range of motion and joint misalignment; therefore your muscles will not work effectively. When your body is misaligned, it also becomes more difficult for nutrients to move throughout your body.

The Curves Stretching and Stress Management is a self-paced class that you can do from the comfort of your own home. Once a week, you’ll meet with your Curves Coach at your local club to review what you have learned, demonstrate the exercise skills you’ve mastered, and help answer any questions you have. Your coach will become a trusted, valuable partner in helping you develop valuable health and fitness skills so that you can live a healthier, more rewarding life.

Balance and Posture by Curves

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2020

Balance – it’s the ability to remain steady and maintain the body in a state of equilibrium.  Balance helps you stand, walk, and move without falling.  It’s what allows you to confidently climb stairs without holding on to a railing or walk on uneven surfaces like sand. Balance is an important part of functional fitness, but it’s often a skill that many people overlook and is therefore underdeveloped or will eventually begin to decline over time.

There are many factors that can lead to the decline of balance as we age.  Impaired vision, the effects of certain medications, muscle atrophy, and more, can affect proper balance and lead to falls and injury.  In fact, one in every three adults aged 65 and older fall each year.1 People who have suffered a fall are 2 to 3 times more likely to fall again. 1 And 1 out of every 5 falls results in a serious injury such as a broken bone or head injury.2

The good news is that it’s not too late to start making changes that can lead to improvements in balance and posture. Curves’ 6 Weeks to Better Balance and Posture class will take you through guided exercises geared to help you improve your balance.  There is a different focus each week, ranging from posture and center of gravity, to core strength, proprioception and equilibrium.

The Curves’ 6 Weeks to Better Balance and Posture is a self-paced class that you can do from the comfort of your own home.  Then once a week, you’ll meet with your Curves Coach at your local club to review what you have learned, demonstrate the exercise skills you’ve mastered, and help answer any questions you have. Your coach will become a trusted, valuable partner in helping you develop valuable health and fitness skills so that you can live a healthier, more rewarding life.

Pelvic Floor by Curves

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2020

The pelvic floor is one of the muscles that make up the core. Strong core muscles not only support your internal organs but also aid in mobility. These muscles, particularly the pelvic floor, must be strong so they can support your bladder, uterus, and bowel. Weak pelvic floor muscles can lead to incontinence and/or organ prolapse.

The National Association of Continence completed a survey in early 2019 found that 48% experience incontinence all the time and found that 51% of those that have incontinence no longer exercise for fear of leaking. Studies have also indicated that around a third of women have urinary incontinence and up to a tenth have fecal incontinence after childbirth.

For years, it was thought that incontinence was an inevitable consequence of getting older, experiencing childbirth, or previous surgical procedures. This was not a topic that was openly discussed even with primary care physicians and therefore, many thought this was something they would just have to deal with. This prevented many from maintaining an active lifestyle. Over the past few years, the conversation has opened up and research has shown this is something that, depending on the severity, can be treated through physical therapy, corrective exercises, or surgery. This class from Curves will help to educate and challenge you physically, so you can live your best life  your #CurvesStrong Life.

Curves Strengthen Your Pelvic Floor course is a self-paced pelvic exercise class that you can do from the comfort of your own home. Once a week you will meet with your Curves Coach at your local Curves women’s gym to review what you have learned, practice pelvic floor exercises, and help answer any questions you may have. Your coach will become a trusted, valuable partner in helping you develop health and fitness skills so that you can live a healthier, more rewarding life.

Stress Management and Mindfulness

Tuesday, October 27th, 2020

We’d like to offer a free 45-minute webinar on stress management and mindfulness. In the webinar, the participants will have the chance to experience a few of our most important practices for mind and body stress management:

Breathing – everyone knows that breathing is fundamental to life. But not all breathing is the same. Learn how to optimize your breathing for maximum energy and minimum stress, anywhere, anytime.

Gentle Stretching – you’ve probably done stretching before, but you might not have experienced Meridian Stretching. Body & Brain utilizes simple, effective exercises to release tension and help your mind and body feel more balanced and bright.

Body Tapping – you may have heard of body tapping. It’s an essential mindfulness practice that can help you relieve tension, increase focus, and feel more energized. Body tapping is one of Body & Brain’s signature exercises.

The webinar will be a combination of lecture and practice, so you’ll want everyone to have a little space to move. The exercises we do will be easy enough for complete beginners, but deep enough for veteran practitioners to enjoy.

For each component of the webinar, the instructor will explain the basic principles and benefits, and then guide participants to try for themselves. Basically, we’ll let you experience how these simple mindfulness practices can help you feel better when managing stress. We think you’ll notice a difference!

At Body & Brain, we have been teaching these practices for over 24 years at locations across the United States. We are proud to be a national leader in the field of holistic exercise and mindfulness. We tailor each of our webinars to the needs and interests of the audience, so let us know what would be most beneficial for you!
